1903 a postcard bearing a ½d Edward V11 issue addressed to Sanquhar being tied by the Greenock c.d.s. for JY 2 03 and also bearing the oval "Glasgow & South Western Rly Steam Vessels "P.S. Mercury" datestamp in purple ink for 2-JUL. 1903., which landed at Greenock at 6.30pm. During the period that the Greenock and Ardrishaig Packets were operating there were also other steamers mainly serving the Clyde and Argyll areas, that had on board facilities to receive mail, though they had no Post Office staff. Private cachets were applied to this mail naming the ship and the company operating the service. The mail was cancelled in the usual way on the ship arriving back in port. Very few items of mail are recorded from this steamer. Bov#324
