1878 an envelope bearing the "Glasgow & Highland Steamers / Chevalier" crest addressed to Dalry posted from Greenock bearing a 1d rose-red issue tied by the Greenock "163" duplex for AU 31 78. The reverse of the cover bears the oval "Posted on Board / "Columba" / 31 AUG 1878 / D. Hutcheson & Co" handstamp in purple ink with a Castle Douglas transit mark. This cover was posted a year before Hutcheson became MacBrayne and before the start of the official packet service. This is the only recorded example of this handstamp. Bov#849
