1840 a small envelope bearing a 1d grey-black from plate 2 lettered B.E. addressed to Liverpool being most unusually tied by the “Poulton / Penny Post” handstamp in black ink contrary to regulations, together with the red Maltese cross of Preston, dated on reverse for JY 27 1840. A rare and most attractive use of this combination of cancellations.
